The need for a platform like Empathigram arises from the growing disconnect and lack of genuine human connection in today’s digital age. Despite the prevalence of social media, many individuals feel isolated, unheard, and emotionally distant from others. Empathigram addresses this need by providing a space where people can connect on a deeper level, sharing their vulnerabilities, offering support, and receiving empathy in return. Empathigram fills the void by fostering genuine empathy, understanding, and solidarity among its users in a world where meaningful communication often takes a backseat to superficial interactions.

User Research

Recent surveys paint a concerning picture. A global survey in 2021 revealed that 43% of Indians feel lonely, ranking India third globally in terms of loneliness prevalence. Alarmingly, about 25% of children aged 13–15 also report feelings of loneliness. Not just India an estimate comes from the World Health Organization, which approximates that at least 10% of adolescents, and 25% of older people are lonely. The Global State of Connections report says at least a quarter of 4.5 billion people felt ‘lonely’ or ‘very lonely’ in 2023.

There have been a lot of studies and journals by Psychologists and Therapists that sharing emotions with strangers is more satisfying than sharing them with friends. And people agree with that.

User Personas & Pain Points

The target group for our platform consists of two types of users in the age group 15 to 45:

  1. Expressers” (Writers): Individuals seeking emotional support, advice, or a platform to express their feelings.
  2. Empathizers” (Responders): Users who are empathetic responders, offering support, advice, or solidarity to others in need.

Problem Statement

Based on insights from the user survey, Empathigram endeavors to cultivate empathy and meaningful connections by facilitating heartfelt exchanges through personalized letters in a supportive online community.

Potential Solution and Technology Involved

Empathigram utilizes a pairing algorithm to match users for reciprocal letter exchanges, fostering empathy and support in a safe, anonymous environment on Discord. The technology involved here is Discord bot for user registration and notifications, pairing algorithm for matching users based on preferences or random selection, and channel management for letter submission and response tracking.

Why Discord?

We chose Discord over Slack for Empathigram due to Discord’s intuitive interface, strong community engagement features, and versatile bot integration options. While Slack offers robust team collaboration tools, Discord’s emphasis on fostering communities aligns better with Empathigram’s goal of facilitating empathy and support through letter exchanges. Additionally, Discord’s popularity among diverse online communities ensures a wider reach for our platform.
